“I had a great idea yesterday.” Joe smiled at me over coffee a few days later. He’d come in late the night before, letting himself in with his key. I had only a vague yet delicious memory of being woken as he slipped into bed and spooned against me, then slept dreamlessly and blissfully until morning

“A great idea?” I lowered my cup, not quite awake yet. “Do tell.”

“I think Don Martin might be more willing to believe you about his mother if he got to know you a little first,” Joe said, surprising me. “You know, so he can see for himself that you’re normal.”

I nearly choked on my coffee. “Normal?” Privately, I’d never aspired to ‘normal’. “Should I start wearing pearls and matching sweater sets like the Buckhead “Ladies-Who-Lunch”?”

“Never.” Joe shook his head, grinning. “Always be yourself, bride of mine. Your sweet-natured, kind-hearted, genuine self. But if there were a way to let Don get to know you, see you’re not a whack job, then you could tell him whatever you need to tell him.”

“I’ve been thinking about it, too, but I’m not quite sure how to go about it.” I took another sip of coffee, welcoming the caffeine as it spread through my system. I’d been hesitating about approaching Don Martin again, concerned that Imogene’s mental fuzziness might lead me to make a big, big mistake. After all, who was I to ruin somebody’s else’s life, somebody else’s wedding? Don obviously loved Jennifer, or he wouldn’t be marrying her, right?

Just because I saw dead people didn’t mean that they always told the truth.

The fact that I didn’t like Jennifer should have nothing to do with it.

My mother’s voice, so clear in my dream. “You’ll do the right thing, Nicki… you always do the right thing.”

“You need to meet with him privately, right?” Joe’s grin got bigger, as though he knew something I didn’t. “I asked around at the hospital. Don Martin has a small but thriving practice in Buckhead. The nurses in the pediatric unit love him.”

I leaned back, picturing my handsome fiancé in the pediatric unit, surrounded by adorable little bundles of joy. “I’ll bet the nurses love you, too.”

His grin didn’t waver, and he didn’t bother to deny the allegation. “The nurse’s opinion of an attending physician tells me a lot. I said that you and I were looking for a pediatrician, asked about Martin. They were happy to recommend him, said he’s a stand-up guy.”

“You told them what?” A tingle touched my neck, banished by the quick smoothing of a hand.

Joe chuckled, well aware that he was making me nervous. “I told them my fiancé’ and I can’t wait to start a family.”

My throat seized up. “Joe, I—”

“I” what? I couldn’t wait to have babies? I was scared to death at the thought of babies? Something—anything—about babies?

“Don’t worry, Nicki.” Joe chuckled again. “We’ve got plenty of time to talk about kids. I had to give the nurses a reason why I was nosing around about Dr.
